City of Merano

The city of Merano on the Passirio offers numerous shopping opportunities, first of all the unrivalled old arcades and the large Friday market, a unique experience, but also many cultural highlights. The Merano music weeks, the grape festival and the wine festival are only some of the many cultural delights in Merano. In the spring the promenades on the sunny side of the town invite you to extended leisurely walks. In winter you should not miss a visit to the Merano Christmas market.

The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle

During a botanical journey around the world in twelve hectares you can truly experience the whole world in one garden: In the sunshine garden you admire the Mediterranean flora, in the forest gardens you encounter plants from Asia, North and South America.

The terrace and water gardens offer a collection of formal Italian styles and an English perennial garden, numerous flower beds and a romantic pond with water lilies.

In the grounds of the gardens there is also the adventure museum Touriseum. With interactive displays visitors tour the 20 rooms to discover the history of 200 years of Alpine tourism.

Spa Therme Merano

Merano is a spa town with tradition: Franz Kafka and Empress Sissi appreciated the benefits of its Mediterranean climate. With the Spa Therme Merano with its indoor pools and a beautiful park the town continues its tradition.

Forst Brewery

The Forst Brewery in Tel is one of South Tyrol’s most important breweries. Every Wednesday at 2:00 pm you can take a look behind the scenes and watch the master brewer at work. Registration required. We also recommend a visit to the Braugarten restaurant and the Bräustüberl beer garden.

Burggräfler winery

South Tyrol is known for its wines. Explore this fascinating world during a guided tour of a wine cellar including wine tasting. The Burggräfler winery expects you from Monday to Friday at 3:00 pm. On the Marlengo irrigation channel path you can walk to the winery.

Castles and fortresses

Not far from Bolzano is the region with the most castles and fortresses in Europa: over 200 historic buildings such as castles, fortresses and country houses in the Appiano municipality are witnesses to a rich and eventful history.

Across the rest of the country there are also numerous castles, fortresses and country houses waiting to be discovered. The powerful towers, the historic walls with their walks along the battlements and also the castle chapels invite you to a special journey back to the Middle Ages.

The most important castles in our locality are the Royal Tyrol Castle in Tirolo, Juval Castle, one of the Messner Mountain Museums by Reinhold Messner, and Coira Castle with one of the largest private collections of armaments.

Museums

Spend a day in one of the country’s museums and immerse yourself into a completely new world. Reinhold Messner set up a whole series of museums, the MMM, Messner Mountain Museums. From Lagundo you can easily reach Juval Castle and Firmiano Castle.

In Bolzano the South Tyrolean archaeology museum tempts you with Ötzi, South Tyrol’s most famous inhabitant and most important mummy anywhere in the world. Modern art can be found in the Museion in Bolzano.

The typewriter museum in Parcines is dedicated to the inventor of the typewriter, Peter Mitterhofer. Also popular is the railway museum in Rablà with the largest digital model railway in Italy. South Tyrol in miniature is the heart of the railway world. A special section was created for children where they can learn through play and control their own trains.
